David Jacobs ~
In my paintings I primarily focus on ideas within science, philosophy, and politics to explore my concern with the apparent randomness of reality and existence. My aim is to portray the universe as a large interconnected machine composed of both micro and macro systems. In general these paintings are a version of metaphysics, concentrating on the philosophy of reality and transcending several forms of science. Primarily biology, quantum physics, and astrophysics combine to concentrate on reality and existence. Highly influenced by Rene Descartes, my work peers into his famous claim “I think therefore I am".

Another influence in my work, Bertrand Russell, believed that in order to know any particular thing, we must know all of its relations. This has lead me to investigate how something as vast as the universe can operate on a large scale such as the interactions of galaxies, solar systems, and stars. Yet the universe coexists with a completely different set of governing laws on a quantum level such as quantum mechanics and wave particle duality. And so my focus turns on how the micro universe and the macro universe interact together. Combined these create our reality. In the midst of reality we find biology and thus life and humanity.

Occasionally, my work touches upon the human mindset of man as the center of the universe. This work is meant to investigate how we see the world around us. Because of this, my paintings probe the social interactions of man and how we interact with ourselves, and our surround environments. Because man views himself as the center of the universe or disconnected from it, my work also touches upon mankind’s struggle with forces seemingly more powerful than himself. This opens my work to a wide variety of subjects such as individuality, anonymity, and discontent. This work is often about sociopolitical issues occurring in the current global political environment such as government authoritarianism and civil unrest.
