Gabriela Anastasio ~
Gabriela Anastasio, a conceptual artist based in Los Angeles, constructs large-scale sculptures that investigate notions of individuality, collectivity, and fragmentation. As an Art student at the University of California Santa Cruz, she created a triptych that would define her artistic and philosophical trajectories. Remote Control, an installation of 58 painted remote controls, commenced her investigation of power and structure, as well as of the post-modern qualities of representation and redundancy. Archetype, a formation of wood and cloth included in her first solo show, emanates the visual cues of human individuality through its inanimate forms. Gabriela's flagship piece, Cubiculum, amalgamates the study of her previous works through a massive sculpture composed of 402 handcrafted plywood cubes. Besides its inherent formal explorations, this sculpture brings to mind dichotomies such as individuality/collectivity, strength/weakness, and construction/deconstruction.

Her installation, Cubiculum, is for sale by the ounce until January 8, 2008.
